  16. <p>     CZECH-MATING CHINA. A meeting last month between Czech
  17. President Vaclav Havel and the Dalai Lama would normally have
  18. provoked a stinging protest from China, which regards the
  19. Tibetan leader as an archenemy. But Beijing held its fire when
  20. it discovered that a Taiwanese trade delegation was in Prague,
  21. checkbook in hand, poised to exploit the anticipated breach in
  22. Sino-Czechoslovak relations. Czech diplomats firmly told the
  23. Chinese that the Dalai Lama's visit would not be canceled and
  24. Beijing could take it or leave it. Recognizing the big bucks
  25. Taiwan was ready to dole out to establish themselves in
  26. Czechoslovakia, Beijing decided to leave it.
